[Campus News]Sustainability Lecture Focuses on Yangmingshan Roadkill Prevention, MCU Guides Students to Local Ecology

Ming Chuan University’s (MCU) Office of Sustainable Development is implementing the Ministry of Education’s “114 Smart and Climate-Friendly Campus Pilot Project,” continuously integrating sustainability concepts into campus teaching fields. On December 8th, in conjunction with the General Education Center’s “Introduction to Environmental Protection” course, the office held an environmental education workshop. Associate Professor Chen Yi-Hui from the Department of Life Sciences at Chinese Culture University was invited to speak on the topic, “Animal Roadkill and Improvement Measures in Yangmingshan National Park,” engaging teachers and students in a discussion on balancing human development and ecological conservation.

Yangmingshan National Park is a crucial ecological area in the Greater Taipei region, yet frequent traffic activities pose survival pressure on wild animals. In the lecture, Associate Professor Chen Yi-Hui analyzed common roadkill hotspots and affected species in the Yangmingshan area using survey data and video records. She pointed out that the roadkill issue is not only related to animal conservation but is also closely connected to road safety. She also explained that long-term scientific monitoring can assist relevant authorities in planning improvement measures, such as ecological corridors and protective facilities, to reduce the risk of conflict between humans and wildlife.

The Office of Sustainable Development noted that climate change and biodiversity loss are significant global issues today. With the resources allocated by the Ministry of Education’s Pilot Project, the university is able to introduce professional faculty from other institutions and translate issues like “Terrestrial Ecosystem Conservation” into concrete teaching material. This lecture, integrated into a general education course, guided students to engage with firsthand research practices, deepening their understanding of the necessity of environmentally friendly measures.

Ming Chuan University continues to promote its dual-axis transformation towards smart and sustainable development, cultivating students’ ability to focus on local issues and practice sustainable actions through diverse environmental education activities.
